Classmates vow to stay away from guns after brothers killed

Police: Stephen Odeus shot, killed older brother, Stanley Blanc, then self

MIAMI – Classmates of a boy who shot and killed his older brother before turning the gun on himself were saddened to learn of their deaths on the first day back at Horace Mann Middle School since the incident.

Police said Stephen Odeus, 14, shot and killed his older brother, Stanley Blanc, 16, at their Little Haiti home in an argument about shared clothes.

"I was sad because I see something good in him," sixth-grade student Denma Dorcinvil told Local 10.

The shooting happened on Memorial Day at the brothers' home near Northeast 71st Street and First Avenue.

"I was very surprised," parent Leonard Malcom said. "My daughter talked to me about it. It's very sad, honestly, it is -- losing two kids at the same time."

Many parents said they took some time to talk to their children about the dangers of guns.

"I stay away from guns," sixth-grade student Monsy Auxaire said.

Police still don't know how Odeus got the gun. Family members said the gun was not theirs.
