Coast Guard officials in Key West were notified of the missing vessel when it was reported overdue on Saturday evening.

The Cutter Dependable found Stewart clinging to a mooring ball approximately three miles off the coast of Islamorada, but were unable to locate the other diver.

The rescued man said the pair were diving and upon resurfacing, found that their boat had drifted. The two men attempted to swim toward the boat, but Stewart was unable to reach the vessel. Stewart the drifted and swam for three hours until reaching the mooring ball where he was rescued.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Coast Guard crews had searched almost 3,750 square miles in waters 15 miles off the coast of Islamorada.
