Coast Guard Cutter Northland stops suspicious 68-foot vessel

MIAMI – The Coast Guard said Monday they seized about $3.5 million in marijuana and detained five suspected smugglers.

Coast Guard Cutter Northland intercepted a 68-foot vessel, south of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. The Coast Guard brought the 3,591 pounds of marijuana and the suspects to shore.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration were processing the marijuana.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement were processing the five suspects.

In March, Coast Guard Cutter Reliance intercepted a go-fast vessel in the same area with about $1.8 million in marijuana and two suspected smugglers. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Puerto Rico was handling the case.
