Coral Gables building evacuated because of fire

Fire started on 6th floor of 12-story building

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A Coral Gables apartment building was evacuated Wednesday after a fire started on the sixth floor of the 12-story building.

The fire started Wednesday afternoon in a kitchen on the sixth floor of an apartment at Gables Waterway Towers, 90 Edgewater Drive.

"I just talked to a friend who has an apartment on the fourth floor and this was on the sixth," resident Margie Slott said. "She says she's got all kinds of problems in her apartment -- water damage, water all over the place."

The woman who lives in the apartment where the fire started had little to say to Local 10 News.

"It's been very shocking," she said.

One person was taken to an area hospital.

Firefighters said 90 of the 331 units in the building weren't safe for residents to return to their homes.

The American Red Cross was providing aid to the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
