Coral Springs man threatens self, prompts SWAT standoff

Police say man surrenders without incident

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. ā€“ A man was placed on a stretcher and carried away in an ambulance after threats to harm himself led to a SWAT situation at a Coral Springs apartment complex Tuesday.

Coral Springs police Sgt. Carla Kmiotek said the 36-year-old man's friends received text and email messages from him claiming he wanted to harm himself.

Kmiotek said officers believed the man was armed and not answering their attempts to contact him, so the SWAT team was called.

After several hours of negotiations, the man surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated under Florida's Baker Act.
