2 people shot in Miami Beach

Gunman flees in dark-colored BMW, police say

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Two people were shot early Wednesday morning in Miami Beach, authorities said.

The shooting was reported about 5:45 a.m. near 71st Street and Collins Avenue.

"I just heard a couple shots this morning. I didn't see anything, just (heard) two in a row," Howard Schoenfield said.

Witness Josh Boli's run took a different turn Wednesday morning when he heard the commotion.

"I thought either someone's getting robbed or someone's getting killed. Those are my only two options there," he said.

Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said a man was shot in the abdomen and a woman was shot in the hand.

Police said the woman ran across the street to a Denny's restaurant for help.

Employees said the woman, who was a semi-regular customer, was stumbling and bleeding when she came inside the restaurant.

"There was blood in front of the Denny's," one customer, Richard Clarvit, said.

Detectives are now trying to figure out what lead up to the shooting.

"There might have been a conversation just before the shooting, just across the street at 72nd and Collins Avenue, and that's what our detectives are piecing together right now," Rodriguez said.

Both victims were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Traffic was diverted from the area as police investigated.

Police said the gunman fled from the scene in a dark-colored BMW.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
