Man killed in Cinco de Mayo hit-and-run crash in Oakland Park

Kinna Collander fatally struck while trying to cross E. Commercial Blvd.

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – A man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while trying to cross East Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park on Cinco de Mayo, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Kinna Collander was fatally struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Commercial Boulevard near Northeast Sixth Avenue shortly after 8:30 p.m., BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said.

Collander was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

"I really miss him," his girlfriend, Kayla Smith, told Local 10 News.

The driver who struck Collander fled west on Commercial Boulevard.

Collander lived with Smith and her mother, just blocks away from where he was fatally struck.

"It's absolutely one of the most heartless things that I think anybody can do," Cathy Smith said.

Detectives were looking for a vehicle light in color and damage to its front bumper, hood and windshield.

Oglesby asked anyone with information to call BSO's traffic homicide detectives at 954-321-4845 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
