SUNRISE, Fla. – A domestic dispute ended in an officer-involved shooting in Sunrise early Friday morning, police said.
Sunrise police were called to a domestic dispute at a home near Southwest 159th Avenue and Southwest 159th Way.
When officers arrived, they found a man holding a knife to his wife's neck, police said.
Shots were fired after the man was repeatedly ordered to drop the knife but refused, police said.
The man, identified as Victor Maldonado, 49, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in stable condition, while the wife was taken to the Cleveland Clinic with minor injuries.
Police said the pair has a history of domestic violence. Police said their two children were home at the time, but they were not injured.
"That's horrible. I feel so bad for the kids and the family," neighbor Valentina Gruber said. "I hope that everything is better. I don't know what's going to happen with the kids and all of that."
The officer was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Maldonado faces charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment, armed sexual battery and unlawful transmission of HIV. He will be taken to the main Broward County jail once he is released from the hospital, police said.
The children are staying with relatives.
