Driver seeks to clear name after fatal crash in Lauderhill

Jerome Johnson says he's innocent, cooperating with police

LAUDERHILL, Fla. ā€“ Jerome Johnson said he hasn't slept well in days.

Johnson said he is stressed and frustratedĀ after a fatal crash Thursday in Lauderhill.

A 57-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle during the crash, police said. Several other people were also injured.

Johnson didn't stop after the crash and said he drove home.

In the hours after the fatal crash, police asked the public to be on the lookout for Johnson's vehicle and Ā described him as one of two reckless drivers who caused the wreck.

Johnson isn't facing any charges. He said he learned about the crash on the news later on and has been cooperating with police ever since.

"I was at my house the whole time. My car was not hiding," Johnson said. "We've been cooperating with police since day one."

Gustavo Frances, Johnson's attorney, said his client wasn't involved in the crash and wasn't aware that it happened until he saw it on the news.Ā

"We actually went to Lauderhill police (Tuesday), speaking with the officer in charge of the investigation, giving a statement," Frances said. "These are all things that Mr. Johnson is under no duty or obligation to do."

Meanwhile, Johnson has a message to the families impacted by the crash.

"My condolence goes out to the family," he said.
