In August 2015, Margate police and the Broward County state attorney's office started a 22-month investigation into the misappropriation of funds within the city's block grant housing rehabilitation program, police said.

The investigation revealed that Liakos received kickbacks of grant funds that are both federally and state funded, police said. The project overages in excess of $900,000 by way of overpayments and misallocation of grant funds were discovered during the course of the investigation.

An arrest warrant for Liakos was obtained June 28, and police in Fort Lauderdale were able to take her into custody Wednesday without incident.
