Gunman in fatal shooting of FAU student sentenced to 48 years in prison

Alexander Gillis was sentenced to 48 years in prison for killing Nicholas Acosta in December 2015.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ā€“ The gunman in the fatal shooting and robbery of a Florida Atlantic University student has been sentenced to 48 years in prison.

Alexander Gillis, 24, of Miami Gardens, was sentenced Wednesday. He previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Boca Raton police said Gillis and four others planned to rob FAU student Nicholas Acosta, 19, of his marijuana stash in a botched drug deal at his off-campus apartment in December 2015.

Police said Gillis shot Acosta twice after ordering him and his girlfriend to the ground.

Donovan Henry was sentenced to 35 years in prison in January after being convicted of second-degree murder.

Rodrick Woods and Gillis' cousin, Adonis Gillis, have both previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for their parts in the robbery and await sentencing.

A fifth suspect has not been publicly identified or arrested.
