Man canvasses Miami Beach home before returning to steal jewelry, police say

$11,600 in jewelry, women's makeup stolen from home

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach police are searching for a man who they believe canvassed a home before returning the next day to burglarize it.

The burglary was reported about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home on West 51st Street off Cherokee Avenue.

Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said the thief was captured on the 36-year-old homeowner's doorbell camera.

Rodriguez said the man covered the camera with a newspaper and was heard yelling to an accomplice, who parked in front of the home in a four-door Nissan Altima with tinted windows.

Rodriguez said the man disabled and removed the doorbell camera before prying open a side door to get into the home.

The thief left the home with various pieces of jewelry, including bracelets, rings, a watch and a necklace, an incident report said. The jewelry is valued at about $11,600.

Authorities said the man also stole women's makeup.

Rodriguez said a man who is believed to be the burglar canvassed the home the day before and approached the front door.

Rodriguez said the man left after spotting the doorbell camera.

"The high-quality video surveillance captured by this technology is an instrumental part of our investigation," Rodriguez said in an email. "We strongly encourage homeowners to research the numerous products available today as crime prevention measures. Miami Beach PD neighborhood resource officers are always available to meet with residents and discuss crime-prevention measures."
