Marathon man shoots friend in stomach with shotgun after fight, deputies say

Gary Moore faces manslaughter charge in fatal shooting

MARATHON, Fla. – A Marathon man shot and killed his friend Friday night in Marathon after a fight, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Gary Moore faces a manslaughter charge in the fatal shooting of John Stevens.

Herrin said Moore, 47, shot Stevens, 46, in the stomach with a shotgun at Moore's home. She said Moore called deputies and was waiting outside when they arrived.

According to Moore, Stevens hit him in the stomach, so Moore shot him in the stomach, Herrin said.

Stevens was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moore had a cut over his eye when deputies took him into custody.

Witnesses told deputies that the two men had gotten into a fight a couple of weeks earlier.
