Miami homeowner exchanges gunfire with burglar who stole expensive birds

Police are trying to identify a man who stole two birds from the backyard of a Miami home.

MIAMI – A Miami homeowner exchanged gunfire with an armed burglar last week after he caught the man stealing two of his birds from his backyard, authorities said.

The incident was reported about 1:30 a.m. last Thursday at a home in the 200 block of Southwest 62nd Court.

Miami police said the victim, who was home with his wife, saw the man on home surveillance video opening a bird cage in his backyard  and taking his two African grey parrots, which are valued at $1,500.

Police said the victim ran out of his home with his shotgun.

The burglar fired two rounds at the homeowner, and the victim returned fire, shooting three rounds at the burglar, police said.

According to detectives, the burglar jumped into a waiting Dodge Ram pickup truck and drove away.

Miami police are looking for two people involved in the burglary. They are described as Hispanic men, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and about 170 pounds. They both have medium builds and were wearing T-shirts and shorts.
