Miami police identify man killed after pulling over to fix car

Jose Manuel Reyes, 42, shot multiple times by robber, police say

MIAMI – A man who was killed over the weekend after pulling over because of car issues was identified Monday as Jose Manuel Reyes, 42.

Police said Reyes was shot several times after he pulled his car over shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday near Northwest 10th Avenue and Northwest Fourth Street in Little Havana.

Police said Reyes was approached by a man who demanded his belongings.

Reyes refused to hand over his property and a struggle ensued, ending with Reyes being shot multiple times, police said.

"We believe that the victim did try and defend himself and that's when the offender produced the weapon and shot him," Officer Yelitza Cedano said. "We don't know the specifics of what led to the event. All we know is he was approached while trying to work on his vehicle."

Reyes was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he died.

"I mean, to think that you're just blocks away from home and you're ruffled up by three gentlemen you don't know, for this community it's a lot," Daniel Suarez, a community activist, said.

Police said the gunman ran west on Fourth Street after the shooting.

Reyes' friends visited the scene of the crime Monday to pay their respects.

"You have to know how to forgive," Carolina Banegas-Reyes said about her husband's death.  "I forgive them. In Jesus' name I don't wish them bad but that they don't continue down this path."

Anyone with information about the shooter's identity is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
