Police investigate armed carjacking, abduction of woman, baby

Attacker considered armed, dangerous remains at large, police say

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police are investigating an armed carjacking and abduction of a woman and a baby in northwest Miami-Dade County.

Miami-Dade police said the incident started before 11 a.m. Wednesday at Arcadia Park in Opa-locka, where a school function was going on.

Police said the 26-year-old victim was putting her 2-month-old son in her Lexus SUV when she was forced into the vehicle at gunpoint by a man in his 20s.

"While she was attempting to grab everything to feed the baby is when he came from the rear, and the next thing you know, she had a gun pointed at her, saying for her to drive away," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.

Police said the man sat in the front passenger seat and told the woman to drive away from the park.

During the drive, the man demanded sexual favors from the woman, which she refused, police said.

Police said he then pointed the gun at the baby and touched the woman in private areas before dropping the woman and child off at Northwest 171st Street and Northwest 38th Avenue.

"If he's willing to point a gun at a 2-month-old baby sitting in the car seat and then try to sexually assault the mom, he's willing to do anything," Zabaleta said.

The woman ran to a nearby home and screamed for help.

Officers were called to the area and began to search for the man and vehicle, police said. Police found the woman's vehicle abandoned in the area of Northwest 178th Street and Northwest 33rd Court.

A Miami Gardens police officer detained someone who fit the description of the attacker. Investigators questioned that person, who was subsequently released, police said.

The attacker -- described by police as a 23- to 24-year-old black man with a thin build and bushy Afro who wore a white shirt and blue jeans -- is considered armed and dangerous and remains at large, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
