Retired naval officer robbed at gunpoint after leaving West Park nightclub

Deputies search for 2 men involved in robbery

WEST PARK, Fla. ā€“ A retired U.S. naval officer was robbed at gunpoint after leaving a West Park nightclub, authorities said.

Newly released surveillance video shows the robbers believed to be involved in the Aug. 5 incident outside The Polo Club at 5590 Hallandale Beach Blvd.

Broward sheriff's deputies said Lamar Salem left the club about 4:30 a.m. and a four-door sedan pulled up to his Toyota Tundra.

Deputies said two men robbed Salem at gunpoint, stealing his cash, wallet and keys.

Salem spoke to Local 10 News reporter Jenise Fernandez on Friday, and said he was reaching for his keys when he felt one of the men tap him on the shoulder.

"At that point, he told me to give him my money, and I gave him the money I had in my front pocket," Salem said.

Salem said the men got away with about $250 in cash.

The thieves didn't steal Salem's truck, and Salem was able to drive home using a spare key that he had on hand.

"I was very horrified," Salem said. "I've never experienced this in my life. I've spent 24 years in the Navy right here on a global/international level, and I can't even imagine something like this happening right here to anybody."

Detectives said the robbers were captured on surveillance video buying three cold drinks with one of Salem's credit cards at a gas station convenience store.

Salem had the following message for the robbers: "You guys are criminals and thugs, and I hope that justice comes to you."

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Detective Theophilus Woulard at 954-321-4270. Anonymous tips can be made by calling Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
