Murder suspect shot dead by Miami-Dade police near Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center

Police say officers fatally shot John Spaulding outside jail

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A murder suspect is dead after a police-involved shooting Monday afternoon outside the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, authorities said.

Miami-Dade police Detective Daniel Ferrin said the police-involved shooting occurred near the county jail.

"My window faces the jail, and I heard approximately five to six shots in rapid succession," Sam Jochananov, who owns TGI Bail Bonds, said.

A photo taken from the scene shows authorities pumping the chest of the suspect, later identified as John Spaulding, 47.

Sky 10 was flying above shortly after the man's body was covered by a yellow tarp on the pavement next to a Jeep Cherokee outside the facility. Multiple shell casings could be seen on the ground. The driver's side window of the Jeep Cherokee was shattered.

Ferrin said Spaulding was wanted on a murder charge in Miami.

Miami-Dade police were assisting Miami police officers in the investigation when they spotted Spaulding in a Jeep Cherokee near the jail.

Ferrin said officers cornered the vehicle and shots were fired as officers approached Spaulding. He said two Miami-Dade police officers fired their guns, and Spaulding was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified.

Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Department spokesman Juan Diasgranados said the shooting did not happen on jail grounds and did not involve any corrections officers.

Diasgranados said the jail was on lockdown after the shooting. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 5:30 p.m.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
