Would-be thief's scheme to steal woman's wallet foiled

Woman almost duped by distraction theft at Whole Foods in Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A would-be thief's attempt to steal a shopper's wallet from her purse at a South Florida grocery store was foiled by a 65-year-old woman, who wrestled it away from him.

The attempted theft was captured on surveillance video on May 11 at the Whole Foods in Pompano Beach.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter said Linda Kalomeris was shopping in the bakery section when a man asked her for the price of a cake, which was on a lower shelf.

As she leaned over to check the price, another man holding a jacket over his hands walked up to her shopping cart, reached into her purse and grabbed her wallet.

Kalomeris noticed that her wallet was missing and yanked the man's jacket away. The wallet fell to the ground, and she picked it up while the man hustled out of the store as she screamed for help.

Carter said the man who asked Kalomeris for the price of the cake casually walked away, pushing his shopping cart.

Robbery detectives reviewed the surveillance video and saw the men enter the store together.

Anyone who recognizes the men from the video is asked to call detectives at 954-493-TIPS.
