David Eanes cited for causing boat crash while texting

FWC says Keys man abandoned boat, swam to shore after crash

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – A picnic in the Florida Keys provided a lesson for one man about texting and boating.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officer Bobby Dube said David Eanes, 53, abandoned his motor boat and swam to shore after crashing it into a sailboat Tuesday near Big Pine Key early Tuesday morning.

Authorities eventually caught up with Eanes at his home and took a statement from him about the accident.

Dube said Eanes claimed he was texting and not paying attention when he struck the sailboat.

Eanes was issued two citations for improper lookout and leaving the scene of a boating accident.
