DCF supervisor resigns after being placed on administrative leave

Second DCF veteran chooses not to appeal firing, quits instead

MIAMI – Two veteran employees of the Florida Department of Children and Families resigned Thursday -- the latest fallout in the case of a south Florida woman charged in the death of her baby.

Supervisor Duray Smith is accused of misconduct and had been placed on administrative leave with pay as the department investigated his role in allegedly falsified reports.

Smith, 46, supervised and signed off on the work of Child Protective Investigator Shani Smith, no relation, who was fired last week.

Shani Smith, who on Tuesday spoke with Local 10 about the case, had been given 10 days to appeal her firing. On Thursday, she also resigned, choosing not to appeal.

"I'm not a criminal. I'm not a monster. I would never overlook a child in a potentially dangerous situation. Never," Smith told Local 10 during an interview on Tuesday.
