Deaf woman fatally struck by car in Deerfield Beach

BSO: 71-year-old woman killed as she tried to walk across street

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Deputies say a 71-year-old deaf woman was killed as she tried to walk across Hillsboro Boulevard and stepped into the path of a sports utility vehicle.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Boulevard and Northwest 2nd Terrace in Deerfield Beach.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, 71-year-old Velma Kimmel was walking northbound from the median across the westbound lanes as Malvinas Miller-Jones, 42, was attempting to left turn in a white 2005 Cadillac SRX from Northwest 2nd Terrace, to head west on Hillsboro.

Deputies said there is no crosswalk in the area of the crash.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported Kimmel to Broward Health North, where deputies said she was pronounced dead.

BSO traffic homicide investigators are investigating the incident.
