Deerfield Beach man accused of slitting roommate's throat

Charles Helton, 55, faces attempted premeditated murder charge

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. ā€“ A man from Deerfield Beach is facing a premeditated attempted murder charge after he tried to kill his roommate by slitting his throat, authorities said.

Charles Helton, 55, was arrested Saturday night at his home at 2108 Congressional Way, where he lives with the victim, identified as John Phelis.

According to a Broward Sheriff's Office arrest report, Helton had an argument with Phelis shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday and shoved Phelis before grabbing a steak knife, coming up behind Phelis and cutting his throat.

Deputies said Phelis' throat was cut from ear to ear, puncturing deep arteries. He has undergone surgery and is listed in critical condition. Authorities said he is expected to survive.
