Divers weigh in on ABC's 'Splash'

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Ask South Florida divers at Fort Lauderdale's Swimming Hall of Fame what they think about ABC's newest show, "Splash," and they'll say they're intrigued.

"Well, I think it's going to be great TV, but I hope they know what they got themselves into," said dive coach Dave Burgering.

"Splash," which airs on Local 10 Tuesday nights at 8 p.m., features celebrities who train and compete in regulation platform and springboard diving at dizzying heights in front of a weekly poolside audience.

The celebrities trained for weeks. Some of the youngest members of the Fort Lauderdale Diving Team have trained for years.

On Tuesday's premiere of the show, the team held a watch party to see how reality show stars turned divers fared on the board.

"It's a pretty good show so far. I can't believe how brave these celebrities can be," said 14-year-old diver Devin Nugent.

The team hasn't picked any favorite stars to win the competition yet, but most said they'd consider "Splash" appointment television.

"It's about the sport I love. Why not?" Burgering said.
