Dog brought to South Fla. by Cuban migrants dies

Chiquitica run over by car just weeks after arriving with Cuban migrants

After her arrival to the U.S., Chiquitica was inspected by veterinarians before being allowed back with her owners.

MIAMI – The journey to the United States for one Cuban migrant has ended in tragedy.

Chiquitica, a dog who made it to the U.S. along with 12 humans, was killed in Miami last week after being hit by a car.

The incident occurred after Chiquitica ran out of the new home she was staying in with the family that brought her to the country.

Back on Sept. 15, Chiquitica came ashore on Miami Beach with the group of migrants who had carried her along on the journey across the Florida Straits.

As there was no protocol in dealing with pets brought into the United States illegally, authorities handed Chiquitica off to veterinarians for a proper health inspection.

Thanks to Local 10, Chiquitica was allowed to spend her quarantine period with her Cuban family, while Miami-Dade Animal Services picked up the tab for the dog's registration and all vaccinations.
