Dog killed, another dog rescued in Dania Beach fire

Off-duty Miami-Dade fire captain makes way out of home with dog

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – One dog was killed and another dog was rescued from a house fire by an off-duty Miami-Dade firefighter, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 2600 block of Southwest 51st Street in Dania Beach.

Deputies said the fire began in the carport and extended to the attic of the house.

Capt. Jorge Carvajal threw a bag over a broken window to enter the burning house. Inside, the fire captain unlocked a door so he had a way out of the burning house with the dog. Another dog was killed in the fire, deputies said.

A neighbor was slightly injured helping the firefighter. Deputies said the neighbor was treated at the scene for suffering cuts from punching a window.

The home was not occupied when the fire occurred. The fire remains under investigation.
