Dogs shot by Miami-Dade police searching for burglar

Police say 1 dog escaped from front yard, tried to attack K-9

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ Police opened fire on two dogs and killed one while searching for a burglar Tuesday.

It happened in the area of Southwest 117th Avenue and 223rd Street. Several photos taken by the dogs' owner show one of the American Bulldogs dead near a driveway and the other bloodied outside the front door.

"I was devastated. I've had him since he was a baby," said Amy Rojas.

Miami-Dade police said the officers opened fire on the dogs after one of them escaped from the front yard and tried to attack a K-9.

The department is investigating the shooting.

"I was holding him and trying to talk to him and he was crying. You could tell he was in pain," said Rojas.

A local animal hospital helped treat the dog who survived, however, it may need to have shoulder surgery and the family does not have the money to pay for it.
