Dolores Sheinis, 80, makes 'sweetheart' judge laugh during bond court

Woman tells Judge John Hurley, 'You could do better'

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – An 80-year-old woman's conversation with a Broward County judge made for a courtroom comedy show during her bond hearing Thursday.

Dolores Sheinis was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and violating an injunction against her ex-husband.

"I don't particularly feel like keeping an 80-year-old woman in the jail who has no criminal record, but this is your second warning," Judge John Hurley told Sheinis. "Don't go around him again."

Sheinis told Hurley that she's been legally divorced for 31 years but living in the same apartment with her ex-husband.

"His assumption is because he paid for the apartment he's entitled to do what he pleases," she said.

Hurley said he couldn't get in the middle of their domestic situation.

"I need to keep you away from him," Hurley said.

"I haven't bothered him for 31 years," she said. "Why would I bother him now?"

"That's the $63,000 question, ma'am," Hurley replied.

Then Sheinis corrected him.

"It used to be 64," she said, referring to the "$64,000 Question" game show from the 1950s.

"Well, that was before my time," Hurley said.

Sheinis then swore on something and a stack of Bibles that she would stay away from her ex-husband.

"What was the first thing you were going to swear on besides the Bibles?" Hurley asked.

"I don't remember," Sheinis said.

Her lawyer clarified.

"All that's holy," he said.

Like a scene out of "My Cousin Vinny," Hurley repeated what she said.

"Oh, all that's holy. Yes, sir," Sheinis said. "I didn't recognize your twang."

"Ma'am, have you ever thought of doing a standup routine?" Hurley said.

"I did. If you paid me good money, sweetheart, I'll be there," she said.

Hurley told her that she seemed to have "a great wit" about her.

"Let me ask you something, ma'am," Hurley said. "How have I done as a judge?"

"Not bad, but you could do better," Sheinis replied.

Her response had everyone in the courtroom laughing.

"I've got to tell you, you've brightened my day, ma'am," Hurley said.

"That's what the last guy said, and then he sued me," she said.
