Driver flees after single-vehicle crash; passenger dead

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A single-vehicle crash in northwest Miami-Dade County left one person dead and another injured, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Detective Jennifer Capote said a black Toyota Celica was traveling northbound on Northwest 17th Avenue at a high rate of speed shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday when the driver lost control near Northwest 74th Street and struck a fence and cement utility pole. 

A 35-year-old passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver fled after the crash but was located by police a short time later, Capote said.

That driver was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
