Driver injured after crashing Escalade into Sunrise home

Homeowner says student-driver crashed into home

SUNRISE, Fla. ā€“ A 15-year-old driver was injured after he crashed into a home in Sunrise Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened in the area of Northeast 60th Avenue and 12th Street.

The homeowner told Local 10 News that he was in the kitchen when he saw "a blur of red" coming toward him.

"The next thing you know, everything was floating in the kitchen, almost similar to an earthquake," Richard Washington said. "Before I knew it, the whole kitchen was totaled."

Washington said that the person behind the wheel of the red Escalade was a student driver.

"You know as teenagers we all make mistakes. I think his older brother was teaching him how to drive and I guess he forgot the brakes," Washington said.

Authorities said no one inside the home was injured, but the family will have to be displaced. The Red Cross was called in to help the family.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition has not been released.

Police said the teen was issued two citations for not having a valid driver's license and failing to use due care.
