Driver killed in collision with Pembroke Pines police SUV

Jessica Lee Bonilla recently arrested in Hollywood after New Year's Eve incident

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A woman who was killed in a collision with a Pembroke Pines police officer early Thursday morning had recently been arrested after a New Year's Eve altercation with Hollywood police, arrest records show.

Jessica Lee Bonilla, 24, of Miami Lakes, was killed in the collision at Pines Boulevard and Northwest 114th Avenue in Pembroke Pines.

Witnesses told police that the officer, identified as Olayemi Okegbola, was traveling east on Pines Boulevard about 2:15 a.m. when a woman traveling south in a 2012 Infiniti ran a red light at the intersection.

Pembroke Pines police said Okegbola did not have time to stop, and his SUV collided with the car.

The woman, later identified as Bonilla, and Okegbola were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where Bonilla was pronounced dead.

According to a Hollywood police report obtained by Local 10 News, Bonilla was arrested on New Year's Day after she punched a police officer and kicked him in the groin along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk.

The report said Bonilla had been removed from Nick's Bar & Grill because she was belligerent. The report said Bonilla was shouting profanities in public and had difficulty keeping her balance while holding her boyfriend's son, so police attempted to place her in handcuffs, but she resisted, attacking the officer.

Bonilla was jailed on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Police are investigating whether alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Okegbola is a nine-year veteran of the Pembroke Pines Police Department who was on patrol at the time of the crash.

"Right now he is sedated and he's resting," Capt. Al Xiques said. "There's no serious injuries that we know of suffered by the officer, (and) we expect him to make a full recovery."

Both directions of Pines Boulevard at Northwest 114th Avenue were shut down for several hours Thursday morning after the fatal collision.
