Elephants save semitrailer from tipping

Driver got stuck on freeway shoulder

A stranded semitrailer in Louisiana would have overturned if two elephants hadn't intervened, according to New Orleans news station WDSU.

Deputies with the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office said they were called to a semitrailer on Interstate 49 at 7:03 a.m. Tuesday.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they said they were stunned to see the two pachyderms keeping the 18-wheeler from overturning.

Three elephants were being taken from New Orleans to the Frisco, Texas area. Authorities said the elephants were part of a circus performing in the area. The Jerusalem Shrine Circus was in New Orleans this past weekend. Another is scheduled Wednesday through Sunday in Frisco.

According to a news release from the Sheriff's Office, the semitrailer got stuck after the driver pulled onto the edge of the shoulder. No citations were issued.
