Friend of FSU gunman speaks to Local 10 News

Louis Dilbert describes Myron May as 'quiet' but 'very active' in campus community

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ā€“ Louis Dilbert spoke exclusively to Local 10 News reporter Hatzel Vela, one day after his friend, Myron May, went on a shooting spree at the main campus library at Florida State University.

Dilbert, who is from Allapattah, said he met May while they were undergraduates at FSU. Dilbert said he saw him last at a friend's wedding a couple years ago and said they stayed in touch on social media.

"We ran the same circles in college," Dilbert said.

Dilbert said he and May were members of a service-based organization on campus called Progressive Black Men.

"We ran into each other quite frequently and had positive interactions with each other," Dilbert said.

Dilbert said he was stunned by the news of the shooting and is not sure why May would commit such an act.

"(He was a) quiet guy," Dilbert said. "But very active in the campus community. Most people would regard him as a positive individual."

But somehow, something went wrong.

According to authorities, May sent packages to eight friends before the shooting, including Joe Paul.

Paul also knew May during their time at FSU and said they stayed in touch through social media. On Saturday, May contacted Paul, asking for his address so he could mail him something. It wasn't until May was identified as the shooter that Paul realized the package likely had to do with Thursday's tragic incident on campus.

"I put two and two together that he asked for our information, because maybe he was sending us a manifesto," Paul said. "I don't know what he was sending."

At this time no one knows what was inside those packages. All eight people have been instructed to hand it over to police as soon as it arrives.

"What we hope is in the package is why he chose to do this," Paul said.

Police believe May was in a state of crisis based on journals and videos they found.
