FAA warned of issues with doomed Learjet model

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ The FAA issued a bulletin over the summer concerning issues with various Learjet models, including the Learjet 35 that crashed off the coast of Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday night.

In the "Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin" issued on June 24, 2013, the FAA stated a concern over possible cracking in the control column of the flight controls in 25 different Learjet models.

According to the FAA report, maintenance personnel had reported finding cracks in the control columns of the 35A model, a version of the plane that crashed Tuesday.

When the FAA inspected five airplanes, all five had cracks in the same area.

The bulletin specified inspecting the control columns for cracks and replacing the control column assembly.
