Family pleas for help in finding Hollywood hit-and-run driver

Jason Swanson, 30, caught fire, died in crash

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – The family of motorcyclist killed in a hit-and-run crash are taking their outrage public, hoping to persuade the community that the way their son, brother, and friend was left to die, is flat out wrong.

"They just drove around him and left him there," a family member said during a news conference Wednesday morning.

"And nobody stopped to help," a crying sister said.

"How can you not come forward and tell us what you saw?" said the grieving father.

"For a country that's supposed to be united, we don't seem to be united," his brother told reporters.

The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Jason Swanson, 30, was riding his motorcycle southbound on 56th Avenue, approaching Washington Street, when he was hit by a car.

The bike caught fire on impact and so did Swanson's body. Witnesses said the woman who hit him got out of the car with a young girl, looked at the burning man, then drove away.

"What is the world like today when you can bring your child,  6- to 8-year-old, out to a driveway, stand next to a burning body and get back in your vehicle and leave," said Greg Swanson, the victim's father.

Surveillance cameras captured the driver fleeing the scene.

The vehicle is described as a dark, late 1990s Ford Explorer or Sport Trac that should have damage on its lower passenger side near the running board.

Family members aren't taking Swason's death quietly and neither are neighbors.

"You know, I felt bad when I hit a dog when I was driving, and I picked up that dog and took it to the hospital," said neighbor Mary Johnson. "This young man didn't even have a chance to get help."

Broward County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.  The number is 954-493-TIPS.
