Family: Robbery victim in medically-induced coma

Joshua Childs killed, 3 others injured in Pompano Beach shooting

POMPANO BEACH, Fla.The 54-year-old man shot during a robbery attempt while he and three other men played dominoes remained in a medically-induced coma Monday, according to his family.

Chris Singleton told Local 10 that 54-year-old Alphonso Wright (pictured right) and 23-year-old Rashaad Payne remained at Broward Health North. Payne's condition wasn't immediately released.

Singleton was released from the hospital Monday. He was shot in his left forearm, right bicep, and hip.

"They just started shooting at us," said Singleton. "I'm still thinking about a friendly game of dominoes that just ends up with someone shooting at us."

The shooting happened in the 1600 block of Northwest 7th Lane about 12:56 a.m. Sunday.

The Broward Sheriff's Office pronounced 23-year-old Joshua Childs dead when they arrived.

"They just kept telling me, 'Oh, Josh is dead. Josh is dead.' I saw him take his last breath in front of me," said Singleton. "They took a life. That was it."

Deputies passed out flyers about a half mile where the shooting took place, hoping they would lead to tips.

"I mean, it's Pompano Beach. It's a big community, but it's a community within a community," said Broward Sheriff's Office Det. Louie Rivera. "People know each other. People visit the local barber shop or they go to the church and they congregate and they talk and that's why we want everyone to become aware of Mr. Childs' death."

Detectives believe there were four armed robbers. Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
