FBI offers $25,000 reward for information about gold heist

Tractor-trailer robbed in North Carolina began journey in Miami

MIRAMAR, Fla. – The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the people responsible for the robbery of a gold shipment that originated in Miami, officials announced Wednesday.

Approximately $4.9 million in gold bars was stolen from a tractor-trailer along Interstate 95 in Wilson County, North Carolina, earlier this month.

The tractor-trailer was set to arrive in Boston on March 2, but on the evening of March 1 the occupants of the trailer said they were robbed.

They told authorities that two men, who identified themselves as "policia," restrained them, set up traffic cones around the truck, and led them into a nearby wooded area before stealing the gold.

The robbers, who spoke only Spanish during the heist, are believed to have fled the scene in a white van. Since the shipment began its journey in South Florida, FBI agents believe that the robbers might have been from the Miami area.

"These trucks are relatively nondescript, so someone would have had to have had some information to know what was in the back of that truck," FBI Special Agent Justin Fleck told Local 10 News.

An additional reward may be available through the South Florida courier company, TransValue, Inc., the FBI said Wednesday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI at 754-703-2000.
