Allegiant Van Lines, Northern Van Lines, Northeastern Vanlines shut down

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Federal authorities closed three moving companies based in Broward County that customers complained held their shipments hostage.

The Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced Tuesday it had shut down Allegiant Van Lines, Inc. in Davie, Northern Van Lines, Inc. in Cooper City, and Northeastern Vanlines, Inc. in Pembroke Pines.

"The last thing families should have to worry about during a move is whether or not their goods will be held hostage by a dishonest moving company," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

Authorities suspended Allegiant Van Lines from operating for at least one year and fined the company more than $88,000.

The company's owner also operates Northern Van Lines, Northeastern Vanlines, and a moving company in South Carolina, said investigators. More than 100 complaints have been filed against the three companies and they face more than $31,000 in fines.

Consumers can report unsafe and unlawful moving companies by calling FMCSA's nationwide complaint hotline at 1-888-368-7238 (1-888 DOT-SAFT) or by visiting the database at nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov.
