Several fights break out at Hialeah Senior High School

HIALEAH, Fla. – Several fights at Hialeah Senior High School Wednesday afternoon prompted a  "code red" lock down and a heavy police presence.

Students reported on social media that several students were injured during multiple fights inside the school, 251 E. 47 St. But authorities could not confirm if there were injuries.

"The whole HHS fighting each other and the Hialeah gang unit slamming nig---," Erica Kane said on Twitter.

Kane added that the fights broke out in the cafeteria just before 2 p.m. Other social media users described a similar scene and said there was an ambulance at the school, which prompted speculation that there was a stabbing. Hialeah paramedics were at the school for an unrelated incident when the fights broke out. Students were asked to stay inside their classrooms with the lights off.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez said a "student altercation" led to the lock down, which was a precautionary measure. No arrests were made, Gonzalez said.

"Hialeah High School is safe after a minor disturbance," a Miami-Dade Schools Police Department tweet sent about 2:30 p.m. said. "School was placed on precautionary lock down and a controlled dismissal was conducted."

Miami-Dade and Hialeah police were at the scene responding to unconfirmed reports of a stabbing and a gun on campus. About an hour later, Hialeah police said the students were safe.

Some students used social media to show their disappointment at the media attention that the school was getting Wednesday afternoon.

"I really hate the fact that the administration and a lot of students have worked hard to give Hialeah High School a good name and these imbeciles ruined it," Susette Onate said on Twitter.

Hialeah High Student Government shared the sentiment.

"Do not let incidents like these tarnish the reputation of the school," their tweet said. "These events are not representative of our student body."
