Fire sparks at abandoned prison in Pembroke Pines

Cause of fire remains under investigation

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – An abandoned prison in Pembroke Pines caught fire Tuesday morning.

Sky 10 flew above the former prison at 19600 Sheridan St. just before 8 a.m. Smoke could be seen coming out of the windows and doors of the former Broward Correctional Institution.

In September, Local 10 News took a tour of the abandoned maximum security state prison that has been closed since 2010. It once housed some of the most dangerous women in Florida but has fallen into disrepair in recent years.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
