HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Several Hollywood roads have reopened to traffic after a fire at a strip mall.
The fire was reported about 1:15 p.m. Monday at a shopping plaza on State Road 7.
Hollywood police were forced to close parts of State Road 7 and Hollywood Boulevard because of the fire. Just before 7 a.m. Tuesday, Hollywood police announced that the roads had been reopened.
Sky 10 was above the scene shortly afterward as numerous fire trucks were spotted near the back of the plaza.
The flames and heavy smoke appeared to be coming from an Asian cuisine market.
Employees at a nearby Pet Supermarket were also spotted in the parking lot with some of their animals. They loaded the animals in vans to be taken to other locations as a precaution.
Four businesses caught fire, and several suffered smoke and water damage.
"As soon as we saw it we started running," said Albert Correa, who works nearby. "You know, anybody who sees smoke coming out, their first reaction is going to be to run."
Fire officials said the roof of the strip mall collapsed while firefighters were putting out several hot spots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
