An Islamorada man told Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies that he returned to his home Thursday afternoon and found his front door locked, something that he never does. When he walked around to the back, he saw a man in his house.

Startled, the man rode off on a skateboard, but the resident followed him on a bicycle, he told deputies.

The man rode to a nearby convenience store, where he met a woman before getting away in a silver PT Cruiser, a witness told deputies.

Deputies later spotted the car traveling north on U.S. Highway 1, but they lost sight of it in traffic. A short time later, they found the car parked on a cul-de-sac off the highway.

When deputies approached the car, they found the suspects had reclined the front seats and were hiding, sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Knespler and Legate were identified by the resident and a witness.
