Florida lawmaker wants liquid nicotine packaging to be safe for kids

Law would require safety caps on flavored 'vamping juice' that may confuse kids

WASHINGTON, D.C. ā€“ Sen. Bill Nelson introduced legislation Thursday in an effort to keep trendy e-cigarettes' liquid nicotine away from children.

The consumer protection legislation would require child resistant packaging on the flavored liquid nicotine that is used when "vamping."

"We've got to keep kids from being exposed to this new kind of poison," Nelson tweeted.

Manufacturers are using marketing that associates the product with edible substances such as cotton candy, Fruity Loops and Gummi Bears.

"There's enough nicotine in some of these bottles to kill small children, and even if a small amount spilled on a child's skin it could make them extremely ill," Nelson said in a press release.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers reports about 1,500 calls of intoxication due to liquid nicotine this year.Ā  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports related poison calls have been rising since 2010.

Nelson hopes the Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act of 2014 will change that. Sens. Mark Pryor, Richard Durbin, California Sen. Barbara Boxer and Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet co-sponsored the bill.
