BSO wouldn't let mother visit ill daughter in hospital

Sheriff's spokeswoman says woman's hospital room is extension of jail

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A South Florida sheriff's office blocked a woman from visiting her critically ill daughter in a hospital despite a judge's order.

The Miami Herald reported Monday that the Broward Sheriff's Office refused to let Lucy Moss visit her 26-year-old daughter, Kristin Carare, on Sunday, even after Judge Jose Izquierdo permitted her visitations.

Carare became ill last week after being jailed for three months on drug possession charges. She is on life support. Her mother said Carare is a heroin addict.

Moss traveled to Fort Lauderdale from Cleveland after learning of Carare's illness. She was allowed two visits, but then sheriff's officials said further visits would not be allowed.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion told the Herald that Carare's hospital room is an extension of the jail and security regulations must be followed.

Concepcion said that the sheriff's office doesn't typically allow for hospital visitations because of security reasons but made an exception in this case.

"We went above and beyond in allowing the two visits," Concepcion said.

However, Carare was released from custody on her own recognizance Monday morning. She remained in the hospital, but her mother is now allowed to visit her.
