Food truck narrowly misses Miami Beach apartment building after collision

Heavy equipment needed to remove truck wedged between tree, building

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A food truck collided with a sport utility vehicle early Friday morning in Miami Beach and narrowly avoided crashing into an apartment building.

The collision was reported shortly after 5 a.m. at Byron Avenue and 71st Street.

Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said the tractor-trailer became wedged along the side of the building.

Michael Thompson was behind the wheel of the Gordon Food Service truck and said he's lucky to be alive.

"It happened so fast," he told Local 10 News investigative reporter Jeff Weinsier.

Thompson said a tourist who failed to stop at the stop sign blamed him for the collision, but police at the scene said that wasn't the case.  Thomason said he was traveling east on 71st Street when a rented Toyota SUV ran the stop sign at Byron Avenue.

Oscar Lopez was on his fourth-floor balcony at the time.

"I saw the truck coming this way, and I went inside and said, 'He's going to hit the building,'" Lopez said.

The apartment building wasn't damaged, but the cab of the truck was wedged between trees and the building.

Heavy equipment was needed to remove the truck.

No one was injured.
