Fort Lauderdale man harassed days before killing

Robert Regan, 67, found dead Monday in front of apartment

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man who was killed outside his Fort Lauderdale apartment Monday morning was well known to officers who patrolled the area, because he would often call them or flag them down in an effort to try to improve his neighborhood, police said.

Sources told Local 10 News reporter Andrew Perez that the victim, Robert Regan, 67, often called police to report drug dealers in the area.

Reports also show Regan confronted neighborhood drug dealers outside his home on Saturday and told them to leave.

Police said he would often report illegal activity and worked to cleanup the neighborhood, which sources said is known for the drug flakka.

Detective Tracy Figone told Local 10 News that police found Regan about 5 a.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Northeast Third Avenue.

Authorities said his red pickup truck had been vandalized with blue paint on Sunday. Sources said Regan was ambushed the day after calling police about the vandalism, and was struck in the back of the head and stabbed multiple times.

According to an incident report, Regan told police that he believed drug dealers who live nearby were responsible for the vandalism.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
