Fort Lauderdale to see high tides by weekend

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ The end of August marks the beginning of high tides.

The tides may look low now, but not for long, Fort Lauderdale Assistant Public Works Director Nancy Gassman told Local 10 News.Ā

"There's two tides a day, so it'll last for a few hours," Gassman said.

Research shows Fort Lauderdale will see the highest tides starting to roll in on Saturday.

"We want to be ready, (and) we want to be a resilient, sustainable community," Gassman said.

Above average high tides are expected throughout South Florida starting Saturday through Sept. 2; Sept. 26 through Oct. 2; Oct. 24 through Oct. 31, and lastly from Nov. 24 through Nov. 27.Ā

When it comes to flooding, it's the low-lying areas that get hit the hardest.

New technology is helping flood-prone neighborhoods like Victoria Park.

Gassman offered up the following tips to stay safe:

-Never walk through floodwater.

-Never drive through a flood, because it could cause severe damage a vehicle.

-Never take a boat out on the water during high tides unless the boater has checked the tide before leaving the dock. Clearance levels can become an issue.
