Funeral service planned for Fort Lauderdale detective killed in crash

Alcohol may have been involved in crash, police say

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. ā€“ Evidence of the crash that killed Detective Christopher Sheehan on Saturday was scattered Monday near Wiles Road and U.S. Highway 441.

A trail of tire marks and vehicle fluids lead up to scorch marks on the pavement from the fire where Sheehan's Jeep Wrangler came to rest at about 2:20 a.m. in Coral Springs.

Sheehan -- a seven-year veteran of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department -- was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 30-year-old was off-duty at the time of the crash that JoselynĀ Lopez, 29, crashed her 2010 Dodge Challenger into the Jeep. Ā

Police believe Lopez may have been intoxicated and speeding at the time of the crash.

During his tenure with Fort Lauderdale police, Sheehan was assigned to the operations bureau as a patrol officer and as a field training officer. His most recent assignment was to be a detective with the rapid offender control unit.

Sheehan also served on the departmentā€™s SWAT team for four years and was recently selected to be part of the SWAT Waterborne Entry Team.

"Chris was an incredible officer and friend and this is a devastating loss for our police family and the city of Fort Lauderdale," Sgt. Mike Tucker, vice president of the Fort Lauderdale police union, said in a phone interview with Local 10 News.

A service for Sheehan will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Broward Center of the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Ave. Uniformed officers and the public are welcome to attend. Ā
