The floating "Gator in the Bay" got a warm send off Sunday as it headed down the New River.
The Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Jack Seiler, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the send off at Las Olas Riverfront, located at 300 southwest 1st Avenue, that began at 5 p.m.
The "Gator in the Bay" will be on it's journey down the New River and Intracoastal Waterway where it will be headed to the Miami Yacht Club at Watson Island.
The main goal of the project is to draw attention to the Everglades' fragile ecosystem and restoration efforts.
The giant 40-ton alligator will be the largest exhibit displayed during Art Basel week.
