Giant Burmese python captured at Everglades National Park

Park spokeswoman says snake not record-setting despite size

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, Fla. ā€“ A large Burmese python was captured and photographed at Everglades National Park earlier this month.

Everglades National Park spokeswoman Katie Corrigan said the snake was captured by a permitted python researcher along the Shark Valley tram road July 9. The python was later euthanized.

Prior to being euthanized, some National Park Service and U.S. Geological Survey interns were photographed during a training session to help them gain confidence and experience handling large snakes.

Corrigan said a necropsy revealed that the female snake had not reproduced, and the snake's stomach was empty. She said there were no unusual findings.

"While this individual was among the largest of the pythons that have been removed, it was not record-setting," Corrigan said.Ā "We expect to occasionally encounter large pythons in this size range as we continue python removal efforts, though most pythons that we encounter are smaller."
